For nearly two decades, people knew me as a florist.
Today, more and more people know me as a journalist.
Both are true.
I am Ashley Greer, a Washington, DC-area journalist, writer, editor, entrepreneur, and the founder of MetaFleurs, an emerging independent news organization dedicated to exploring the intersection of culture, politics, technology, philosophy, history, and power.
While my reporting often begins with a local story in Alexandria, Virginia, it rarely ends there. A museum exhibit becomes a conversation about public memory. A military parade becomes an essay about strategic communication. A flower arrangement becomes an examination of symbolism that stretches from Renaissance painting to international diplomacy.
The world is connected.
MetaFleurs exists to explore those connections.
A Washington Journalist with an Unusual Perspective
Washington is one of the world's great centers of political reporting.
Thousands of journalists cover elections, legislation, lobbying, and government every day.
My work asks a different question:
Why does power look the way it does?
As an art historian, florist, entrepreneur, and journalist, I have spent years studying visual communication before I ever began reporting professionally.
Governments communicate through architecture.
Corporations communicate through design.
Military powers communicate through ceremony.
Individuals communicate through clothing, flowers, gestures, and symbols.
Much of the world's most important communication happens without words.
That has become one of the defining ideas behind my journalism.
From Flowers to Philosophy
Before becoming a journalist, I spent twenty years designing flowers professionally and founded Atelier Ashley Flowers, an invitation-only floral design studio serving the Washington metropolitan region.
Working with flowers taught me something unexpected.
Every arrangement tells a story.
Every color has meaning.
Every decision communicates something.
Eventually I realized those same principles applied far beyond floral design.
Political rallies.
Diplomatic state dinners.
Military ceremonies.
Religious rituals.
Museum exhibitions.
National memorials.
The same visual language appears everywhere once you learn to recognize it.
That realization changed the direction of my career.
Why I Started MetaFleurs
MetaFleurs began as a place to publish essays.
It is becoming something much larger.
My vision is to build an independent Washington-based publication where journalism, philosophy, art, technology, history, and geopolitics can exist together instead of being separated into artificial categories.
The name reflects that philosophy.
"Meta" asks readers to look beyond the obvious.
"Fleurs" reminds us that flowers have always been more than decoration. Throughout history they have symbolized diplomacy, remembrance, celebration, protest, mourning, love, empire, and identity.
No subject exists in isolation.
Neither should journalism.
Reporting Across Washington and Beyond
My reporting includes profiles of artists, entrepreneurs, historians, museum professionals, and community leaders throughout Alexandria and the greater Washington region.
At the same time, I write extensively about international affairs, strategic communication, artificial intelligence, military symbolism, information warfare, and the changing nature of authorship in the age of AI.
Some readers discover MetaFleurs because they are interested in flowers.
Others arrive looking for geopolitical analysis.
Many stay because they enjoy seeing connections they had never considered before.
Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence has become one of the defining subjects of my work.
Not because I believe machines replace writers.
Quite the opposite.
I believe AI forces us to think more deeply about creativity, responsibility, truth, authorship, and what it actually means to create something original.
Over the past year I have openly documented my own collaboration with AI as part of a larger experiment in how technology can expand—not replace—human thought.
Rather than hiding the process, I believe the future of journalism depends upon discussing it honestly.
A Philosopher Disguised as a Journalist
People sometimes ask whether I consider myself a journalist, a philosopher, or a writer.
The answer is yes.

Building an Independent News Organization
Independent journalism has never been more important.
As traditional media continues to evolve, I believe there is growing space for smaller publications that value curiosity over ideology, depth over speed, and thoughtful analysis over outrage.
My long-term goal is for MetaFleurs to become a respected Washington-based publication featuring original reporting, essays, interviews, visual storytelling, and interdisciplinary analysis from contributors who are willing to cross traditional boundaries.
I believe the most interesting ideas often emerge where different disciplines meet.
