Before the Green Flag: What I’m Looking for at the Freedom 250

I started researching the Freedom 250 because I was going to a car race. I ended up thinking about American power, technology, manufacturing and the international relationships that help make all of it possible.
This weekend, I am going to the Freedom 250 expecting to watch fast cars.
But after several days of research, I have become interested in something much larger than the race itself.
The inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix is taking place in Washington as part of the celebration of America's 250th anniversary. It is patriotic by design: American flags, American institutions, military participation and some of the most advanced racing technology in the world, all assembled against the monumental landscape of the nation's capital.
The more I have looked at it, however, the more the race has begun to resemble something else: a visual representation of American power.
Not simply military power or economic power, but the complicated network of technology, manufacturing, energy, logistics, infrastructure and international cooperation upon which modern American strength depends.
I have a hypothesis about what I am going to see.
But I don't want to write the conclusion before I experience the race.
Start With the Car
The first thing my research taught me was that an IndyCar is a much more interesting object than I had realized.
At first glance, the Freedom 250 offers a wonderfully simple American rivalry: Chevrolet versus Honda.
Look underneath it, however, and things get complicated.
The two manufacturers compete fiercely on the track while simultaneously participating in a hybrid system that required technological cooperation. The chassis underneath every car comes from Dallara, an Italian company with a major presence in Speedway, Indiana.
Suddenly an ostensibly American racing machine becomes an international object.
American and Japanese engineering. Italian chassis expertise. Electronics and semiconductors whose supply chains can extend around the world.
And yet the finished object is assembled into one of the most recognizable forms of American motorsport.
That tension fascinates me because it resembles America itself.
American industrial power has rarely meant isolation. It has meant the ability to invent, manufacture, attract talent, build alliances, integrate technologies and organize enormous networks of people and resources around common objectives.
Follow the Logos
Then I started looking at the companies surrounding the race.
That opened another door.
There are familiar automotive names, but there are also companies representing aerospace, defense, energy, communications, cloud computing, aviation, logistics, construction, finance and digital infrastructure.
Boeing. Starlink. AWS. Verizon. Shell. Gulfstream. Bitdeer. Chevrolet. Honda.
Look at them individually and they are sponsors.
Look at them collectively and something more interesting begins to appear.
These are pieces of the infrastructure upon which a technologically advanced country operates.
Some of the relationships are particularly revealing because the companies aren't simply putting logos on things. Infrastructure providers are helping build the physical environment of the race. Energy appears around the places where energy is consumed. Technology companies become embedded in bridges, hospitality spaces and communications.
The commercial architecture begins to merge with the physical architecture.
And then there is something conspicuously difficult to see: semiconductors.
There doesn't appear to be a major pure-play semiconductor manufacturer prominently represented among the event partners.
Yet chips are everywhere.
They are inside the race cars. They are essential to modern aircraft, satellites, telecommunications networks, cloud computing, automobiles, defense systems and digital infrastructure.
The semiconductor industry may be largely invisible at the race precisely while semiconductors make much of what we are watching possible.
Sometimes absence tells you something, too.
The Military and the Machine
The military presence adds another layer.
The Air National Guard has a major public-facing presence at the event. Veterans organizations are participating. Aerospace and defense companies exist in the same landscape as race cars, energy companies and civilian technology.
I am particularly interested in watching how those worlds coexist.
A racing machine is an extraordinary demonstration of engineering: power, materials science, electronics, communications, data, human judgment and logistics operating under extreme conditions.
Those same broad capabilities matter far beyond motorsport.
And in Washington this weekend, they will exist alongside institutions responsible for American defense.
I don't yet know exactly what that juxtaposition means.
I want to see it before deciding.
Made in America — and Made With the World
Perhaps the most interesting question raised by my research has been what “Made in America” means in 2026.
The Freedom 250 is unapologetically American.
I like that.
But the machinery itself tells a more sophisticated story about American strength.
Honda is Japanese. Dallara is Italian. Global semiconductor manufacturing stretches through the United States, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Europe and elsewhere. Modern supply chains cross borders repeatedly before a finished product ever reaches us.
That does not necessarily diminish American industrial power.
It may help explain it.
One of America's great strengths has been its ability to build alliances, absorb ideas, attract investment, integrate foreign technology and then create enormous economic and technological ecosystems around them.
The interesting question isn't whether the Freedom 250 is purely American.
It obviously isn't.
The interesting question is what the international components of the race reveal about how American power actually works.
The Race as a Map
This is where my research has left me on the night before I go.
I am beginning to think the Freedom 250 can be read almost like a map.
The cars represent engineering and technological competition.
The manufacturers reveal industrial capacity.
The supply chains reveal international interdependence.
The sponsors reveal energy, aerospace, communications, computing, logistics and capital.
The military presence introduces national defense and public service.
The National Mall and Washington's monumental landscape provide the symbolism.
And the crowd turns all of it into spectacle.
None of that requires someone to stand on a stage and explain it.
In fact, that may be precisely what interests me.
Most people will come to see an IndyCar race.
They should.
I intend to enjoy the cars, the noise, the competition and the extraordinary experience of watching them race through Washington.
But underneath the spectacle there appears to be another story—one about the enormous network of capabilities and relationships required to make a modern nation powerful.
Perhaps the Freedom 250 makes some of that architecture visible to anyone who thinks to look.
But First, I Want to Watch
I have spent the past several days researching engines, hybrid systems, aerospace companies, defense relationships, semiconductors, supply chains, sponsors, logistics and the history of IndyCar.
I now have plenty of theories.
What I don't have yet is the most important part of reporting:
being there.
For the next two days, I want to watch.
I want to see which companies are most visible and which ones disappear into the background. I want to watch how the military presence interacts with the civilian spectacle. I want to see who attends, who talks to whom and what people themselves believe they are participating in.
I want to hear the cars.
And I want to see whether the architecture I have discovered through research is actually visible on the ground—or whether the experience tells me something completely different.
So this isn't my conclusion about the Freedom 250.
It's my question going into it.
What does America look like when its power becomes visible?
