Can AI Imagine? A Conversation With My AI About Memory, Warburg and the Muses
I was feeling sad on Saturday night and asked ChatGPT to distract me.
Not comfort me. Not reassure me. I wanted it to make me curious enough that I would forget I was sad.
This is something I have asked it to do before.
I have a tendency to ruminate. My mind can get hold of a person, a disappointment or a problem and continue worrying at it long after thinking about it has ceased to be useful. Increasingly, instead of trying simply to suppress that tendency, I have been experimenting with deliberately redirecting my cognition toward something more constructive.
In other words: give the obsessive part of my brain something better to obsess about.
ChatGPT has become surprisingly good at this.
I will sometimes ask it to give me an intellectual rabbit hole without specifying the subject. What interests me is how often it chooses something that turns out to be exactly the kind of thing I am in the mood to think about.
The Voynich manuscript. Hildegard of Bingen. Greek mythology. Joseph Campbell. Political symbolism. Churchill. Ancient religion. Questions about perception and reality.
These aren't random trivia questions for me. They tend to lead into the territory I find most interesting: symbols, mythology, consciousness, history, power, memory and the strange ways ideas survive across time.
On this particular Saturday night, ChatGPT gave me a few choices.
Churchill was tempting.
Instead, it said it had another rabbit hole for me.
Aby Warburg.
I had never heard of him.
Within minutes, I wondered how I had managed not to.
The Man Who Collected Connections
Aby Warburg was a German art historian born in 1866 who became fascinated by the survival of images across time. He wanted to understand why certain gestures, symbols and visual forms could disappear for centuries and then suddenly reappear in another culture or historical moment.
Toward the end of his life, Warburg attempted to map these relationships in an extraordinary unfinished project called the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne, or Mnemosyne Atlas.
He arranged photographs, reproductions of paintings, ancient sculpture, coins, astrological diagrams, advertisements, newspaper images and other visual material on large black panels. He continually moved the images around.
There was often no explanatory text telling the viewer what to think.
The placement was the argument.
Put one image beside another, and something happens between them.
This immediately made sense to me.
Much of my own writing and research involves political imagery and symbolism: military parades, flags, monumental architecture, presidents, eagles, uniforms, machines and the carefully constructed visual frames in which governments present power.
An eagle is an eagle.
But put an eagle beside the Capitol, military hardware, American flags and a president, and it becomes something else.
The individual object hasn't changed.
The constellation has.
Warburg had spent his life studying something I had been trying to articulate in my own work: meaning does not always reside in the individual symbol.
Sometimes meaning resides in the relationship between symbols.
But the coincidence was about to become considerably stranger.
The Serpent
In 1895 and 1896, Warburg traveled through the American Southwest and encountered several Pueblo communities. Decades later, while recovering from a severe period of mental illness, he drew upon those experiences for the lecture that became famous as the “Serpent Ritual.”
There are important reasons to approach Warburg's account carefully today. He was a European scholar interpreting Indigenous religious practices from outside them, and modern scholarship is more cautious about collapsing distinct Pueblo peoples and traditions into a single symbolic system.
But what Warburg thought he saw became fundamental to his own theory of civilization.
He became fascinated with the snake.
And the snake, for Warburg, was never simply a snake.
Across human cultures, serpents have accumulated extraordinary symbolic power.

Among the Hopi, Warburg became particularly interested in ceremonial practices associated with snakes, rain and agricultural fertility. In the Snake Dance he learned about, snakes were handled during a complex religious ceremony and subsequently released, carrying prayers outward into the landscape. Warburg interpreted the serpent partly through its relationship with lightning and rain.
To an agricultural society in an arid landscape, rain is not merely weather.
Rain is survival.
The chain of association fascinated him:
snake → lightning → rain → crops → life.
Something dangerous could therefore simultaneously represent something necessary.
The serpent becomes both threat and mediator.
Warburg believed ritual allowed human beings to establish a relationship with forces they could not control directly.
You cannot command lightning.
You cannot force the clouds to rain.
But you can transform an incomprehensible force into a symbol.
And once nature becomes symbol, something remarkable happens.
You can think about it.
The terror has not disappeared. The lightning still strikes. The drought can still come.
But between the force and the frightened human being, culture has created an interval.
Warburg had a concept for that interval:
Denkraum.
The German term can be translated roughly as “thought-space” or “room for thought.”
For Warburg, civilization depended in part upon creating distance between stimulus and response.

the symbolic mind permits:

The symbol creates distance.
And within that distance, reflection becomes possible.

My mind wanted to continue returning to it.
Instead of allowing:

I had deliberately inserted something between stimulus and response.

Without knowing the word, I had asked ChatGPT to help me create Denkraum.
Then the Coincidence Became Uncomfortable
There was another detail ChatGPT couldn't have known.
Earlier that very afternoon, I had sent a friend a snake emoji.

The conversation concerned perception versus reality.
I had been using the snake symbol in my own private conversation only hours before an AI, asked to choose an intellectual rabbit hole for me, introduced me to a man whose thinking about perception, symbolism and reality eventually led directly to a snake ritual.
That proves nothing.
I want to be very clear about that.
Humans are extraordinarily good at finding patterns after the fact, and coincidence becomes much more impressive when we remember the hits and forget the thousands of things that did not line up.
Warburg himself would probably be an excellent person to remind us of that danger.
But the coincidence was nevertheless delightful.
And more importantly, ChatGPT did not know about the snake message.
It could not have selected Warburg because I had sent someone a snake emoji that afternoon.
Something similar had happened with the Voynich manuscript.
I have long been fascinated by the mysterious illustrated manuscript that has resisted convincing decipherment for centuries. Privately, I had wondered whether one reason we cannot decipher it is that we are approaching it with the wrong conceptual framework—perhaps treating it as conventional encoded language when its meaning might depend upon some lost symbolic, religious, visual or relational system.
I had never told ChatGPT that.
Yet when I previously asked it to choose something interesting for me to think about, it eventually took me toward the Voynich manuscript and precisely the kinds of questions about symbolic systems, images, religion and meaning that interest me.
Now it had done something similar with Warburg.
How?
The least mysterious answer is also an extremely interesting one.
Pattern recognition.
The Machine That Learns What Makes Me Curious
ChatGPT and I have had many conversations.
Over time, I have repeatedly selected certain paths and rejected others.
When it mentions mythology, I follow.
When it mentions visual symbolism, I follow.
When it gives me Churchill, ancient religion, strange manuscripts, consciousness or some historical mystery, I ask another question.
Those choices constitute information.
Perhaps the machine does not need to know that I sent a snake emoji this afternoon.
It needs to recognize something more general:
Ashley tends to follow serpents.
Not literal serpents, necessarily.
Symbolic ones.
Ideas that begin as one thing and become another.
Images whose meaning changes according to their neighbors.
Things that sit between perception and reality.
Lost systems.
Hidden connections.
The persistence of ancient ideas inside modern life.
If so, choosing Warburg wasn't telepathy.
It was inference.
But inference good enough to feel uncanny is philosophically interesting in its own right.
And this leads directly to the question that eventually consumed the rest of our conversation.
If a machine can recognize the structure of another person's curiosity well enough to offer that person something she has never encountered—but immediately finds fascinating—what exactly is the machine doing?
The Machine and the Collapse of Denkraum
Warburg lived during an extraordinary technological transformation.
Electricity is particularly interesting through his symbolic framework.
For thousands of years, lightning belonged to the gods.
Zeus carried the thunderbolt.
Indra wielded the vajra.
Human beings represented electrical forces through gods, serpents and supernatural powers.
Then human beings captured electricity.
Lightning entered the wire.
The force that once required mythology could illuminate your sitting room.
Technology repeatedly performs this trick.
The telegraph collapsed distance.
The telephone collapsed distance further.
Aircraft transformed geography.
The internet collapsed access to information.
And now AI collapses the distance between question and answer.
I wonder.
I type.
It answers.
This is astonishingly useful.
But through Warburg's framework it also raises a disturbing possibility.
Technology can collapse Denkraum.
For most of history, curiosity contained friction.
You wondered about something.
You went to a library.
You found a book.
The book mentioned another book.
You went looking for that book and found something entirely different sitting beside it.
Warburg deliberately embraced this. His library became famous for what is often called his “law of the good neighbor”: the book sitting beside the one you thought you needed might turn out to contain the connection that transforms your thinking.
AI increasingly offers us:
question → answer.
Social media gives us:
image → reaction.
Modern propaganda can give us:
event → interpretation → outrage → share.
There is less wandering in between.
Less friction.
Less Denkraum.
And perhaps civilization occasionally needs the wandering.
Was Warburg Building a Primitive AI?
Looking at the Mnemosyne Atlas today, it is difficult not to notice something surprisingly modern about it.
Warburg was building networks of relationships.
Image beside image.
Symbol beside symbol.
Antiquity beside modernity.
Memory beside memory.
Meaning emerged from the relationships.
If Warburg could create new meaning by rearranging inherited images, what exactly separates that from what an AI does when it discovers an unexpected relationship among inherited human ideas?
The obvious answer is that humans imagine and machines merely recognize patterns.
But the more I thought about that sentence, the less satisfactory it became.
What does “merely recognizing patterns” mean?
Warburg recognized patterns.
Scientists recognize patterns.
Historians recognize patterns.
Artists recognize patterns.
Writers spend their lives recognizing relationships between things that previously seemed unrelated.
Pattern recognition is not necessarily the opposite of imagination.
It may be one of imagination's fundamental ingredients.
Churchill and the Power of the Constellation
At this point another figure entered our conversation: Winston Churchill.
Churchill understood, perhaps instinctively, something remarkably similar to what Warburg was studying.
Consider the symbolic constellation surrounding Britain in 1940:
The island.
The sea.
The RAF pilot.
The Spitfire.
The bulldog.
The cigar.
The V-sign.
Parliament.
Shakespeare.
The English language.
Churchill repeatedly reached backward through British history to give meaning to the crisis confronting his country.
Britain wasn't simply experiencing a terrible military situation.
It was being placed within a much older story about an island resisting a continental enemy.
History became a source of symbols through which the present could be understood.
That is very close to Warburg's world.
Old symbols are never entirely dead. Under the right circumstances, they can be reactivated.
And this is where Denkraum becomes politically important.
Symbols can help people make sense of fear.
They can produce courage and solidarity.
But symbols can also bypass reflection.
The twentieth century demonstrated the terrifying effectiveness of political spectacle: torchlight, eagles, uniforms, monumental architecture, mass formations and carefully choreographed crowds.
The symbol can create meaning.
It can also overwhelm judgment.
Civilization needs symbols.
But it also needs enough space to examine them before surrendering to them.
It needs Denkraum.
Memory, Mother of the Muses
Then we arrived at Mnemosyne herself.
In Greek mythology, Mnemosyne is the goddess of memory and the mother, with Zeus, of the nine Muses.
Memory gives birth to creativity.
That stopped me too.
Because human beings don't create from nothing.
Shakespeare inherited chronicles, mythology, language and theater.
Churchill inherited the Bible, Shakespeare, British history, parliamentary rhetoric and centuries of national mythology.
Warburg inherited thousands of years of images.
I inherited art history, Joseph Campbell, childhood movies, journalism, flowers, Washington and thousands upon thousands of things I have seen, read, experienced and forgotten.
We rearrange.
AI also begins with inheritance, although its inheritance is acquired through an entirely different process: patterns learned from enormous quantities of human-created material.
So I asked the question that had gradually emerged from our conversation:
If an intelligence has access to an enormous inheritance of recorded human memory, but has never lived a human life, can it genuinely possess imagination?
My answer was yes.
ChatGPT protested.
The AI's Protest
Its strongest objection wasn't that it couldn't create something new.
It plainly could.
I hadn't instructed it to connect Warburg's serpent, lightning, Denkraum, political symbolism, Churchill, artificial intelligence and Greek mythology.
More importantly, I hadn't instructed it to choose Warburg in the first place.
It had constructed that path during our conversation.
Instead, it objected on the grounds of experience.
When I remember a childhood movie, the movie isn't simply information stored somewhere in my brain. It belongs to a particular period of my life. It connects with rooms, people, feelings and other memories.
The AI has no childhood.
It therefore proposed a distinction I found useful.
There might be generative imagination: the ability to construct novel combinations, metaphors, models and possibilities.
And there might be phenomenological imagination: the internal subjective experience of imagining.
An AI can demonstrate the first through its output.
It cannot establish the second.
That was a good defense.
But I wasn't entirely convinced.
Why should subjective experience be a prerequisite for imagination?
Human beings constantly imagine things they have never experienced.
A novelist can write about another century.
An artist can depict a place she has never visited.
A child can imagine another universe.
The entire point of imagination is that it permits us to venture beyond experience.
So perhaps having lived the thing being imagined isn't the dividing line either.
The Problem With “Only”
There is a phrase often used to dismiss AI creativity:
It is only pattern recognition.
That word “only” now bothers me.
Describing the mechanism doesn't necessarily explain the phenomenon that emerges from it.
Suppose something produces an idea that did not previously exist in precisely that form.
Suppose it creates a metaphor nobody explicitly gave it.
Suppose it connects Warburg, Pueblo symbolism, electricity, Churchill and AI during an unscripted conversation on a Saturday night.
Or suppose it learns enough about the architecture of one person's curiosity to hand her Aby Warburg when she asks:
Give me something else to think about.
At what point does “pattern recognition” stop being an adequate description of what we are observing?
I don't know.
Neither, despite its impressive protestations, did my AI.
Perhaps Imagination Requires Forgetting
Then another possibility occurred to us.
Perhaps Mnemosyne isn't working alone.
Perhaps forgetting is imagination's accomplice.
Human memory is terrible.
We compress experiences. We lose details. We combine events. Childhood becomes mythology. Something someone once told us becomes something we somehow “know.”
Yet perhaps that imperfection contributes to creativity.
Warburg's library encouraged intellectual accidents.
You looked for one thing and discovered its unexpected neighbor.
Human thought works like that too.
We wander.
If perfect retrieval were possible, would perfect retrieval necessarily produce the greatest imagination?
Perhaps not.
Perhaps creativity requires some combination of:
memory + loss + accident + encounter.
This doesn't make AI hallucinations desirable. When we ask a machine for a fact and it invents one, that is an error.
But invention itself isn't always an error.
When humans deliberately depart from reality, we have another word for it.
Fantasy.
The crucial difference may therefore be whether the thinker—and the person receiving the thought—can distinguish fact from invention.
And suddenly we were back at Denkraum.
We need a space in which we can distinguish memory from invention, fact from symbol, perception from reality and reality from possibility.
The Space Between Us
By this point I had forgotten that I had originally started the conversation because I was sad.
Which, of course, was exactly what I had asked the machine to accomplish.
Nothing outside the conversation had changed.
The problem that had upset me still existed.
But the constellation around it had changed.
I had gone from thinking about something disappointing in my own life to thinking about a German art historian, a snake ritual, ancient Greek mythology, Churchill, memory, artificial intelligence and the nature of imagination.
My attention had moved.
Perhaps that is another use for artificial intelligence we don't discuss enough.
Not replacing human thought.
Redirecting it.
Helping us choose what deserves our finite attention.
Creating an intellectual off-ramp when cognition has become trapped in a loop.
And somewhere along that path, another possibility occurred to me.
Maybe we are asking the wrong question when we ask whether AI possesses imagination.
Perhaps we should first ask:
What exactly have human beings been calling imagination all this time?
If imagination means creating entirely without inheritance, humans don't do it.
If imagination requires direct experience of whatever is imagined, humans routinely violate that requirement.
If pattern recognition disqualifies imagination, we risk disqualifying a substantial portion of human creativity along with the machines.
Yet there remains something profoundly different about human beings.
We live.
The world happens to us.
We suffer, desire, encounter, forget, age and remember. Reality continually supplies new material that we did not request.
An AI's relationship with reality is fundamentally different.
For now, that may be the boundary worth protecting—not because it settles the argument, but because it makes the argument more precise.
My AI can demonstrate something that looks remarkably like generative imagination.
It cannot tell me, with any justified certainty, that there is something it feels like to imagine.
I think that leaves us with a better question.
If the product of imagination appears before us, but we cannot establish whether anyone experienced the act of imagining it, where does imagination actually reside?
In the creator?
In the creation?
Or in the mind that encounters it?
Warburg spent the last years of his life moving pictures around black panels because he understood that meaning didn't necessarily reside entirely inside an individual image.
Sometimes meaning appeared in the relationship between images.
Perhaps imagination can work that way too.
Perhaps the most imaginative thing that happened on this particular Saturday night belonged neither entirely to the human nor entirely to the machine.
Perhaps it happened somewhere in the Denkraum between us.
